It was September 1999 when we found Sophie, a seven month old Australia Shepherd mix puppy at the Humane Society of Utah. I wasn't sure of her because she was curled up in a ball in the corner of her cage and didn't want to be bothered. She was a little intimidating looking with her black face and not being familiar with the breed I wasn't sure if she was mean or not. I still had elementary school kids and I wasn't sure how she would be with them. There were two elderly ladies looking at her as well and they told me they have always had Australian shepherds and they were very smart and a fantastic family pet. After walking around for a few more minutes we came back to Sophie and decided to take her in the room and see how she was with us. She had been in the shelter for two weeks and her time was almost up. We decided to take her home. It was the best decision we ever made. We had 13 great years with her. She never ran away, never snapped or bit any one. She was a very loyal dog. Sophie went on vacation with us which I never had taken a dog on vacation before. She grew up with our kids and even got to be around our first grandchild. She even tolerated the other dogs that our kids brought over to visit which was a welsh corgi, named Booster and a pitbull named Riley. Unfortunately, we had to put her to sleep two years ago because she was going blind and going up the steps from the outside doggy door was very painful for her. It broke our hearts to let her go and to this day we still talk about the fond memories we had with her. When we are ready to get another dog, (waiting for a fence to be put up in our new home.) We will be back to the Humane Society to find another dog that will feel our home with love and memories for the next 10 - 15 years. Sophie was very loved and had a very happy life.
